About Lucy Grossmith

Welcome to my website.
All my life I have been passionate about art so over the past 15 years I have made my love my work, painting canvases for exhibitions and commissions and illustrating for books and cards.

I live in beautiful rural Suffolk with my family and work from my garden studio where I run
heart-to-art.

I grew up in the countryside so I have always been surrounded and inspired by nature... I paint wild birds and animals, countryside and coastal scenery along with gardens, old buildings and snippets of country life. My paintings are a magical interpretation of what I see mixed in with happy thoughts or feelings about a place, illustrating special moments in time. My aim is to inspire others and capture their imagination too.

Brief story

I am a self-taught artist and this came about through a desire to follow an independent path. Although unplanned, I have had a wonderfully varied career in art starting with illustrating for children's books in the early 90's when I lived in Wales, at the same time creating papier mache artefacts and jewellery to sell at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre there. Moving onto South Devon in 1992, I went to work at Coombe Farm Studios near Totnes (a privately run art school for students of all ages) to run their art gallery and teach papier mache courses to the art students whilst still developing my own work. It was there in 1993 that I had my first successful one-man exhibition of paintings and 3 dimensional pieces.

Later, I moved to London to work at Camden Graphics where I stayed for eight years as an art editor and illustrator initially, moving up to assistant art director of the creative department over time. I was instrumental in creating some of their well-known, best selling card ranges such as Paper Planet and Phizz and enjoyed working with some of the most talented humour writers and artists. Outside my job at Camden graphics, I continued to exhibit my paintings and run craft workshops.

During this time, I had met and married my husband Dan and in 2002 I left Camden Graphics' studio to devote more time to my own work again. Shortly afterwards, we moved to Suffolk where my son, Jack, was born and where I set up heart-to-art.
